How to Create Cycle Plot Chart in Excel

A cycle plot is a type of line graph that is useful for displaying cyclical patterns across time. Cycle plots were first created in 1978 by William Cleveland and his colleagues at Bell Labs. We published an article about them in 2008, written by Naomi Robbins, titled Introduction to Cycle Plots.

Steps to create Cycle Plot Chart in Excel:

Step 1:
First we need to create the Line chart for Sales data and Average of Data
– Here we are creating line chart for quarterly sales data across years.
In Excel 2013 – Select Data > Insert Tab > Click Line Chart (Under Charts Group)

Step 2:
Now we have to insert gap between segments to draw separate line chart for each cycle.

Insert blank row after each segment.


And now chart leaving a gap between lines (Data and Average Lines).


Here is your cycle plot chart and now you can change the chart look by format chart elements to make it look kool 🙂
